“Confirming Brumell for the position of Commissioner of Police was better than not confirming him, since there was no one else available for that position,” said Leader of the Opposition, Brigadier David Granger.
Granger made this statement yesterday during a press conference held at A Partnership for National Unity (APNU)’s office to call on the ruling party to “reset” its policies.
On Thursday, President Donald Ramotar and Leader of the Opposition, Granger held a consultation in keeping with the Constitution clearing the way for Leroy Brumell to be confirmed as the Commissioner of Police.
Brumell has been the acting Commissioner of Police for the past two years.
Yesterday, the APNU Leader said that it would have been “damaging” to the Guyana Police Force to have a person serving as the acting Commissioner of Police for so long.
“It is not my choice to appoint the Commissioner of Police; I was invited for consultation. Brumell is the most senior person for that post and he is the better qualified person and he was already acting in that position,” Granger said.
Meanwhile, the Opposition Leader is pointing fingers at the ruling party for failing to address the country’s most pressing problems.
“The party (People’s Progressive Party) has not accepted responsibility for the high rate of armed robberies, murderous maritime piracy, rampant gun-gunning, trafficking in persons and other violent crimes,” Granger stressed.
He also blames the party for the performance of the police force. “I am dissatisfied with the performance of the entire police force but I am also aware that the force’s performance has been limited by the quality of policy direction from the Minister of Home Affairs, Clement Rohee.
