Mackeson/TGH Pacesetters Inter-Ward Basketball Championships
By Edison Jefford
Wortmanville/Werk-En-Rust recovered from their scrappy preliminary performance in the early games to impressively beat McDoom/Diamond and land a semi-final spot on Sunday, where they will face an equally impressive Plaisance/Vryheid’s Lust.
Wortmanville/Werk-En-Rust, who suffered a shock loss against Melanie last week, edged Travis Burnett-led McDoom/Diamond 69-68 in the final minute of regulation time in the first game Wednesday night when the Mackeson-sponsored Trinity Grid Holdings (TGH) Pacesetters Inter-Ward Championships continued at the

Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
Naylon Loncke scored 23 points, including some vintage finishes that rolled back many years for the aging player, in a big performance for his team. Michael Turner scored 14 points and grabbed six rebounds, while Randy Richardson had 12 points for Wortmanville.
The team showed full composure after Marlon Rodrigues had finished a lay-up with 58 seconds on the game clock to put his Diamond team ahead. However, Turner finished a put-back in the paint to send Diamond packing from the 2013 competition. Burnett had 20 points and four steals while Ryan Stephney had 14 points and five rebounds.
In the featured game, Plaisance/Vryheid’s Lust, the only team that scored in excess of 100 points twice in the tournament, held the nerves under pressure from Lodge/Meadowbrook to win 75-72, setting up a mega showdown with Wortmanville/Werk-En-Rust.
Shelroy Thomas scored 20 points, while Enoch Mathews had 17 points to lead Plaisance on their offensive end. Stephon Gillis also added 13 points and Nikkoloi Smith 12 points in the huge win for Plaisance/Vryheid’s Lust that was pushed to the limit.
For Lodge/Meadowbrook, they would have been disappointed that a good all-round performance did not result in the win. Hodayah Stewart scored 21 points while Drumson McCullay, Mortimer Williams and Fabian Johnson had 13 points apiece with 12, eight and six rebounds respectively; Pelham Doris was also in the midst with 11 points.
Gillis gave Plaisance the offensive momentum they needed to start the game with 11 points made in the first quarter, including three shots from downtown. Plaisance closed the period leading 25-16 with their offence firing on all cylinders it seemed.
However, Stewart and Doris combined to launch an offensive comeback that resulted in a 36-34 points lead at halftime after Doris had landed a big three-point jumper. The two teams had some entertaining offensive exchanges early in the third period.
McCullay finished a lay-up that put his Lodge team up 42-38, but Mathews responded with a big shot from beyond the arch. The two teams continued to exchange points in an intense period that failed to secure a winner with the scores levelled 50-50 at the end.
Stewart took over the first four minutes of the final quarter, scoring eight points that led to an eight-point lead for Lodge/Meadowbrook with six minutes left. However, after a well-advised timeout, Plaisance ran a play that opened up Smith for a huge three-pointer.
Smith then ran down the court on possession and fired another missile from beyond the arch that quickly equalised a 63-63 with less than four minutes to play. Then it was Thomas’ time; crunch-time; where the guard completely dismantled Lodge/Meadowbrook.
Thomas finished an And1 then made several free throws to put away his opposition and send his Plaisance/Vryheid’s Lust team to the semis on Sunday. The competition will continue with two remaining quarterfinal games tomorrow night at the Sports Hall.
