Dear Editor,
At a meeting on Wednesday, August 28, the members of ACDA decided to give support to the Guyana Women Miners Organisation and more especially its leader, Ms Simona Broomes, as they continue to expose the prevalence of Trafficing in Persons (TIP) within Guyana’s hinterland.
We note with a high degree of concern the recent attempt by those engaged in the corrupt practice of TIP to malign the good name of a sister, who has taken the mantle to protect vulnerable women and children, while bringing to the fore the incompetence that festered within of the Department of Social Service over the years under poor leadership from Indra Chandrapal, Bibi Shaddick, Prya Manikchand and now Jennifer Webster. The fact that these female Ministers of the Government over the years have been in denial of the existence of this scourge, and Ms Brooms and other valiant members of the GWMA have in the past year exposed the dirty underbelly of their reign in the Social Services sector, is disquieting, hence what happened during the past week to Ms Broomes was anticipated.
It is obvious that beyond exposing the existence of TIP, what Ms Broomes and her associates are doing is protecting Womanhood, ensuring values (inclusive of family values) which have been allowed to slip in recent times under the direction of those mandated to protect the vulnerable and uphold family and community values.. The meeting also reflected on pronouncements coming from the GWMA about the non-cooperation, and outright opposition at times from figures in authority. Such acts we condemn and we are urging that a public enquiry be held on TIP at the earliest possible time. Barrington Braithwaite Elton McRae Penda Guyan Rudi Guyan Executive Members of ACDA
