Following three unavoidable postponements and characterized by two venue changes, the most recent after the conclusion of a raging storm at the Uitvlugt Community Centre WCD, professional boxing returns to its rightful place when the Guyana Boxing Board of Control (GBBC) stages the 28th Edition of Guyana Fight Night (GFN) boxing card at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall (CASH), Friday July 5 next.
Ironically, most of the boxers had spewed vitriol and had promised all manner of cruelty to their opponents but in the end it was the elements that had the final say and indeed the tents set up at the venue crumbled under the fury of the winds and rain; the boxers were spared the effort.
Now with little possibility of torrential rains halting the proceedings, the boxers will be given a free reign to set the venue on fire. Activities are expected to commence at a simmer when debutant, Laured Stewart, squares off with Anson Green, in a 4 rounds encounter.
Green has chalked up 2 wins from 3 fights and feels that he is better than Stewart. The latter pugilist has most of the traits of his dad, Laurex, a former top boxer who was as wily as they come. However, he will have to prove that he is capable of a smooth transition into the professional arena. He said that he is ready to show off his wares but Green is brimming with confidence and said he intends to prove that Stewart is not yet ready to mingle among the big boys.
The Revlon Lake/Dexter Gonsalves Jr,/Lightweight title clash is expected to produce fireworks and both fighters predicting a win. Local fans have witnessed Lake in action and will remember the devastating left hook that decked Mark Austin for good. Should he replicate that performance, Gonsalves will have to really come up with something special to win.
Gonsalves walks around with a cool confidence that seem to suggest that he is ready for anything Lake has to offer. During the pre-fight press conference last week, Gonzalez revealed that he was in Lake’s corner when he fought Miguel Antoine in Trinidad and Tobago and despite giving Lake the best advice, failed to get through to him. “So I will just have to give him a practical demonstration of how it’s done, said Gonsalves.
The heat should be well turned up by the time Eversley Browne enters the ring for his Middleweight bout with debutant, Romeo Norville. The two had quite a lot to say to each other during a war of words but it was Eversley’s coach, Ovid London that dominated the confrontation.
He ranted and raved and eventually threatened to take Norville out by the fourth round. London said that he has taken his charge through his drills “and I have been very cruel,” he declared. He also pointed out that the fact that his charge could have endured such cruelty convinces him (London) that he is ready for battle. “It is that very brand of cruelty that my fighter will display fight night,” he proclaimed. For his part, Norville promised to knock out Brown in the third round, one before that predicted by his opponent.
In other bouts, Kelsey George will come up against veteran, Troy Lewis, in a 4 rounds Middleweight encounter and George will be inspired by the promise of a bout with Andrew ‘Sixhead’ Lewis if he wins while Leon Moore tackles Errol Trotman, also over 6 rounds.
A fresh group of amateur boxers will battle it out just before the professional segment gets underway. Light/Heavyweight Desmond Amsterdam (GDF) will tackle Republican, Colin Martin while Kelon King (FYF) goes head to head with Anandram Dharamraj, also of the Republican Boxing Gym (Rep), in a Jr./Welterweight encounter. Another Republican representative, Kevin Rodney will clash with Trevon King in a Middleweight fight while Police representative, Imran Khan opposes Stephon Gouveia of the Harpy Eagles Boxing Gym (HEBG).
So for the third time, administrators were forced to change the venue. They will not be required to provide tents as had happened on the West Coast nor will they have to worry about rain. However, with the mood of the boxers, supported with matching threats, GBBC administrators may very well have to call in the bomb squad because there will be quite a few of those being launched.
The admission fee remains at $1,500 and GBBC officials have assured that those patrons that were affected by the postponement may be able to gain entry by presenting the stubs of tickets purchased that night. Bell time is 20:00hrs.
