All the country’s top cyclist are once again expected to don their cycling gear and head to Berbice on Saturday July 6th for the second annual Island Mist Water Cycle road race sponsored by the Guyana Beverage Company and organised by the Flying Ace Cycle Club.
The event which last year was for cyclists from the Flying Ace club only, will now be open to cyclists throughout the country. The 60 miles race will see the riders peddling off from in front of the Beverage Company’s Berbice outlet at Palmyra at 14:00 hrs to the No51 Police Station and back to the starting line. 
Speaking at the simple launching ceremony which took place at the company new Berbice office at Palmyra East Coast Berbice, General Manager of the Guyana Beverage Company a subsidiary of the Trinidad based SM Jaleel Company, Robert Selman, noted that the company, which has been in Guyana for the past 20 years and Berbice for the past 12 years and Guyanese and more particularly Berbicians have given them excellent support.
He noted that they were happy to be giving back to the community, “This gesture is a small way in giving back to the community especially in the field of sport and education. This is one way to tell the people of Guyana and Berbice thank you for your support.” He said that the Guyana Beverage Company doesn’t spend its money on alcohol and parties. “We do not get involved in alcohol because we are a non-alcohol based company,” He stated.
Selman added that the objective is to try to keep youths off the streets, whether it is by way of sponsoring cricket, football or cycling. “The Management of Guyana Beverage believes that this is the way to go forward to encourage the youths to get involved.” Selman also took the opportunity to thank the FACC for organizing the event and stated that the sponsorship money for this year’s event has been increased tremendously. Mr. Selman was happy how last year’s event went and plans to make it even bigger and better in the future.
Accompanying Mr. Selman were Tampico Regional brand Manager Alana Ramjattan and American Classic Regional brand manager Christine Kellawan both of Trinidad.
Cycling Coach Randolph Roberts, in thanking Mr. Selman and the Guyana Beverage Company, stated that the company is truly one for all seasons. He noted that the gesture by the Company should serve at an example for other businesses.
Prizes will be awarded to the first eight finishers, first three juniors, and first three cyclists from the club and the first three females to complete the distance. There will also be 10 sprint point prizes up for grabs.
The company whose headquarters is based in Trinidad has a number of subsidiaries throughout the Caribbean. It distributes a number of beverages including the Busta, Fruta, Tampico, Viva, Island Mist water, Kool Kids and American Classic among others.
Mr. Selman along with other senior officials of the company is expected to be on hand to start the race and distribute the prizes. Dwight Holder is the defending champion. The race will be coordinator by Coach Roberts. (Samuel Whyte)
