Police Cadet Officer, James Tappin, was yesterday charged with driving under the influence. He appeared at the Sparendaam Magistrate’s court. Presiding over the case was Magistrate Alex Moore.
To the particulars of the charge read to him by Magistrate Alex Moore, the defendant pleaded not guilty.
The prosecution is contending that a breathalyzer test carried out on the defendant on June 2, found that he was under the influence of alcohol whilst driving his motor car. This was after he was involved in an accident which occurred around 4:30 hours on the Better Hope Public Road.
Police statements revealed that the Cadet Officer was driving his car along the roadway when it allegedly hit a seventy-one-year old fish vendor of Better Hope, Chanderjit Sanichar who was attempting to cross the road. Sanichar was pronounced dead on arrival at the Georgetown Public Hospital.
Tappin was subsequently placed on $10,000 bail and is due to return to court on July 15.
