Austin vows to turn back challenge of the ‘chin checker’ in March ProAm boxing

Caribbean Boxing Federation (CABOFE) welterweight title plus a place among the elite boxers to battle for honours in the imminent World Boxing Council (WBC) Anniversary boxing spectacle within a few months. In the meantime, officials of the Guyana Boxing Board of Control (GBBC) have organized a bout against Mark Austin to help him to stay in tuned.
However, while Hardy regards the bout as academic activity, Austin is planning to upset him and rob him of the glory.
The two pugilists joined several others at the signing ceremony yesterday afternoon at Abdools and Abdools Insurance Brokers for the 21st edition of the Friday Night boxing card at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall (CASH) Friday March 30th next.
Hardy has intimated that he will use the bout to procure valuable activity but Austin has other ideas. The two became engaged in a vicious exchange of words moments before affixing their ‘Johnny Hancocks’ to their respective contracts.
“It’s been a long time that I have wanted Hardy to climb into the ring but he has been dodging me and I am happy that he has found the courage to fight me,” said Austin. He then went on to describe the treatment he has in store for Hardy.
The latter boxer plastered an incredulous look on his face and retorted, “I’m confused by those remarks; I have never ducked any fighter much less Austin,” he proclaimed. The man, who had patented the infamous ‘Chin Check,’ a wicked left hook that devastated his foes, then likened himself to an eagle while defining Austin as a carrion crow. “I will fly higher and swoop down on you with a force,” he promised his nemesis.
Austin responded by explaining that he has perfected his art at the Ricola Boxing gym under the tutelage of the late Donald Allison. He said that he is saddened that the former boxer turned coach was not around to see how much he has progressed in the sport. “But I am dedicating this bout to his memory and that alone would signal my intentions to win,” exhorted Austin. The banter continued for sometime before both pugilists left the venue for their respective gyms.
Edmond DeClou battles Kelsie George and though lacking the requisite experience, the latter boxer has assured his fans that he will win the bout. He refused to predict a knockout and said that he will let his fists do the talking on fight night.
DeClou, usually reticent, was uncharacteristically talkative and warned George to mind his mouth. The lanky Lindener said that he would have preferred a sterner test in the form of Howard Eastman or even Andrew Lewis. “Nevertheless, I am happy for the activity and while I intend to treat George with respect, I cannot possibly see myself losing this one, he assured.
Rudolph Fraser was also in the house but his Barbadian based Guyanese opponent, Gardiel Roberts, is still to arrive in Guyana. The two clash in a 6 rounds featherweight encounter and Fraser, who drew first blood in an earlier bout, has signaled an intention of replicating the feat. In the absence of his opponent, he refrained from elaborating.
The other boxer in attendance, Mandessa Moses, fights Venezuelan, Anys Cedillo in an 8 rounds super/bantamweight encounter and the Venezuelan will arrive in Guyana later in the month. Moses has had a lengthy hiatus from the ring but said that she has not left the gym in the interim and is ready to resume fistic duties.
The boxers have opened camp at several gyms around the country. Hardy is at the Forgotten Youth Foundation (FYF) while Fraser, Moses, Austin and DeClou are working out at the Andrew ‘Sixhead’ Lewis Boxing Gym (ALBG). George returns to Berbice at the Pocket Rocket Boxing Gym. Kaieteur Sport will be visiting the various institutions to keep the sporting public abreast of the boxers’ training development during the preparation period.
