educational materials from the Berbice Cricket Board when the organisation hosted the 5th Annual Educational Awards Scheme at the Area ‘H’ Ground.
The main aims of the Educational and Awards Scheme are to promote the value of education for sportsmen and the importance of staying in school to obtain a solid education background.
Those benefitting from the Scheme were Shazim Gaffar (Young Warriors), Gavin Moriah Jnr. (Tucber Park), Balram Latchman (Bath), Bramdat Singh (Bush Lot), Kundali Deonarine (Whim), Joseph Giddings (Edinburgh), Hakeem Miller (Blairmont), Naresh Deonarine (Chesney), Veramootoo Senwasane and Calvin Jeffrey of Rose Hall Town.
Public Relations Officer and Chairman of the Berbice Cricket Board Special Events Committee Hilbert Foster at the presentation noted that the Scheme was launched back in 2008 by the Board in an effort to get youths to make education their primary goal in life.
Speaking directly to the awardees, Foster urged them to strive for discipline at all times and to dedicate themselves fully to their education which is the key to success in life. He explained the importance of an educated mind, on the field of play as it allows an individual to think on their feet and to make correct decisions especially in difficult circumstances.
Board President Keith Foster told the capacity audience that they were investing heavily in the development of youths because they were the future of the game. Every Berbice player, the President informed must be fully prepared on and off the field to face the challenegs of the game and life.
Among the programmes the Board will be conducting this year are Essay, Public Speaking, Spelling Bee and Debating Competitions for students and young players while several others would receive educational assistance later in the year. Clubs would also receive literacy materials which would play a meaningful role in the development of their members.
The recepients expressed gratitude to the Board for investing in their future and for showing great interest in their personal development.
The 2012 programme was co-sponsored by the BCB and the Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club Pepsi Under-19 Team.
