Efforts in the making for another coach from Cuba to also assist
To assist in the widespread development of swimming in Guyana, the Ministry of Youth, Culture and Sport (MCY&S) welcomes Kumiko Inuzuka of JICA to share her wealth of knowledge and experience she acquired over the past 20 years from the sport in Panama and Guatemala through JICA.
JICA is a JapaneseVolunteer Organisation which allows countries to access professionals and experts in various schemes, who will give their time and skills to help from a technical perspective.
In this case, Guyana has acquired Coach Inuzuka to aid in the development swimming generally for the next six months.
With the Ministry promoting sports for national development, a beginners swimming programme along with a life guard training programme will be conducted by the Coach, who will also be spearheading coaching sessions for coaches development.
It is hoped that with these sessions being conducted, there will be an increased interest and partcipation in swimming. The beginners programme will be catering for children from age 5-15.
Permanent Secretary in the MCY&S Alfred King was of the view that with the programme kicking, swimmers will soon have the full uses of facilities since there will be more professional personal around, which according to him is lacking presently.
Director of Sports, Neil Kumar stated that the Coach is very enthusiastic about the programme with the beginners, elite swimmers and coaches throughout Guyana. Inuzuka will be conducting programmes in Linden and Berbice on weekends.
Kumar added that the Ministry has always been by the swimmers’ side and revealed that they had access to the National Aquatic Centre (NAC) for their championships even before the opening ceremony and was shocked by the report of Guyana Amateur Swimming Association (GASA) that permission was not granted.
The Ministry being pleased with the partnership with JICA, Dr. Frank Anthony disclosed that the process of recruiting local swimming coaches and life guards for the NAC has proven to be problematic and with that decided to take a further step in training individuals to have the competences in this area to run the NAC and Colgrain Pools.
The Minister also added that they are seeking to invite another coach by next month from Cuba for a period of two (2) years to assist in taking swimming to another level. There will also be a programme put together for schools across Georgetown and special sessions for adults.
Interested persons for the swimming programme can enroll at the National Sports Commission.
