Two days after his attorneys secured a temporary order to block rape charges being slapped on him,
the Guyana Association of Women Lawyers (GAWL), has again called for the resignation of Police Commissioner, Henry Greene.
The GAWL, in a press release, said that they respect the right of the Top Cop to pursue whatever legal recourse in the courts of Guyana that he or his learned Attorneys-at-law see fit in relation to the allegation that was made against him.
However, they said that it is appropriate to point out that the issue of Greene’ s moral authority to lead the Guyana Police Force has now become relevant for consideration.
According to the release, the reported contents of a recent statutory declaration made by him, “clearly demonstrate that there was conduct in the Office of the Commissioner of Police which reflects an unacceptable approach by a professional police officer (no less of the highest authority) in the execution of his duties.”
“The crux of the matter is the misuse of the Office of the Commissioner of Police for sexual favours, whether consensual or otherwise.”
The GAWL said that such conduct is not for emulation by other police officers, and certainly should never be tolerated from the leader of the Guyana Police Force.
“It is reasonable to conclude that Mr. Greene has in fact lost the moral authority to lead the Guyana Police Force and should therefore no longer be required to so do.
The GAWL said they hope that, notwithstanding all recent occurrences involving the allegations leveled against Mr. Greene, police officers of all ranks would not be discouraged from operating to the highest standards of professionalism. The women lawyers’ body said that they are keenly looking forward for a timely resolution of this “anomalous situation” in order to restore the confidence that citizens ought to have in the Guyana Police Force and its work.
