A courtesy call was paid Friday on the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport the Honourable Dr. Frank Anthony by two members of the Guyana Karate College who have recently earned the impressive feat of becoming the youngest Black Belt Karatekas in the Caribbean, North and South America and indeed all the countries across the globe that are governed by the world karate organization the International Karate Daigaku (IKD).
Tyler Orderson at seven years old became the youngest student to earn a coveted Shotokan Karate Black Belt (shodan) recently after undertaking a grueling examination under the review of the Chairman and Chief Instructor Shihan Frank Woon-a-Tai M.S., 9th degree Black Belt of the IKD and other senior instructors.
Tyler has already dedicated three years to martial arts training and excelled far beyond where many children and adults give up. Tyler though small in stature is a giant where it matters most – in self-discipline and determination. Many times Tyler would have to practice his techniques against other students 2 or 3 times his body weight.
Tyler has not only held his own during normal practices and rank tests throughout the years, but has completed the difficult tasks of Black Belt qualification quite easily showing extreme physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual strength.
Tyler has had to make some tough choices, often giving up another fun activity to attend karate class.
Also paying a visit to the Minister was Miss. Aliya Wong who earned the accolade of earning a 2nd degree Black Belt (Nidan) at 10 years old, another first globally.
Alliya has also been very successful in her martial arts pursuits, medaling in all the tournaments that she has so far participated in including at the Pan American Tournament and two succeeding Caribbean Karate Championships the first in Grenada the second this year also in Grenada.
These two very gifted athletes following these successes will from January 2012 commence carrying out preparatory training with their colleagues from the Guyana Karate College in anticipation of their participation at the next major international martial arts tournament.
Minister Anthony congratulated the young Karatekas on their outstanding achievements, for making their instructors, families and country proud and extended good wishes for their participation in the upcoming International Karate Daigaku Cup World Championships scheduled for July of 2012 in Toronto, Canada.
The Minister assured the karatekas and officials present from the Guyana Karate College of government’s continued support for karate in the years to come, acknowledging the benefits both mental and physical for participants, including improving focus and discipline in children, teaching self-protection among a host of others.
