The Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation’s Chemotherapy department will be relocated in January 2012 to the building which houses the Obstetrics/ Gynecology department. This was confirmed by the hospital’s Chief Executive Officer, Michael Khan.
The facility’s current Chemotherapy Department has been met with disdain by some patients who complained of its poor sanitation and uncomfortable seating accommodations.
GPHC’s Chemotherapy Department
According to some patients, the location is “cramped” on the ground floor of the Male Surgical Ward. Its interior shows signs of neglect with cobweb, dirt, old boards and furnishing, and uncomfortable seats. There are two chairs in the department which are situated in a manner which provides no privacy during the chemo sessions. The patients emphasised that having beds in the department would have been preferable since they sometimes experience discomfort.
They are concerned that being ‘sickly’ and entering such an unhealthy environment may give them additional health complications.
The facility is manned by one nurse. It has been providing chemotherapy services for decades free of cost to cancer patients. The treatment of patients are case-specific since there are various types of cancer.
The department has more than 60 patients but owing to the 21-day cycle treatment, only six to eight patients visit the facility daily.
