The Berbice Cricket Board under its 2011 Pro-education Campaign hosted
an Essay Competition for school children and young cricketers and a Poster Competition for children attending Nursery School.
The Winners of both competitions were presented with an attractive range of prizes by the Special Events Committee of the Board earlier this week at their Charlotte Street, New Amsterdam, Office.
Chairman of the Special Events Committee, Hilbert Foster, stated that the BCB strongly believes in the value of education among sportsmen and women as it is the foundation to a successful future.
The competition was opened to students of Primary and Secondary Schools who were required to submit an Essay of 250 – 300 words on the topic “My Favourite Berbice cricketer and Role Model”.
Dozens of Essays were received with the favourite cricketers and role models being Assad Fudadin, Devendra Bishoo, Narsingh Deonarine, Veerasammy Permaul, Brendon Bess, Shemaine Campbelle, Nermala Sewdat and Tremayne Smartt.
Foster informed that the Poster competition was opened to all Nursery School Students and they were required to submit a drawing on the topic “My Friends and I playing cricket”.
Board President, Keith Foster congratulated the winners of the competition noting that his Board was now not only a cricket authority but a highly successful NGO which was making a huge contribution to youth development in Berbice.
Treasurer Anil Beharry spoke on the importance of focusing on the personal development of youths while pledging that the Berbice Cricket Board would continue to invest in education and youths.
The winners of the Poster competition were Keelah Dey of Savannah Park Nursery – 1st, Sherry Durant of Rose Hall Town Nursery – 2nd and A. Bascombe of Ankerville Nursery 3rd.
The Essay winners were Natalie Mahadeo of Tutorial Academy Secondary, Karema Baijnauth of Rose Hall Town Primary School, Yadram Balgobin of Port Mourant Secondary School and Loyydel Lewis of Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club.
The competitions were sponsored by the BCB, Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club and Food For The Poor (Guyana) Inc.
