Traffic officers of the Guyana Police Force (GPF) and representatives of the Guyana National Road Safety Council (GNRSC) yesterday began observances with a sensitization and educational session for students at the Guyana Red Cross Society (GRCS) Barrack Street, Kingston yesterday.
Students and teachers that attended the event, as road safety month kicks off.
Several schools attended the event which spawned a practical ‘School Road Safety Patrol Competition’ between schools to promote and practice road safety.
Prizes will be awarded for: Best Road Safety Teacher, Best Group Coordination, Best Individual Performance and Best School Overall Performance in first, second and third categories.
Chairman of GNRSC, Surendra Khayyam, said that 500 students were trained in various schools throughout the country—all told 100 schools.
Adding that the population in Guyana is a small one, Khayyam said that there should be programmes to further educate the students in school about the choices they make during their period on the roadways.
“Road safety is a must; it’s my business, your business and it is everybody’s business.”
He explained that the human factor is so critical that more emphasis must be placed on education in road safety in which people, resources, and time should be set aside.
GNRSC officials noted that education and enforcement must go hand in hand to promote road safety, in which two sets of people, civilian and law enforcement must work together to bring road users together to let them know of their roles in road safety.
