Government served notices to vendors on the Diamond Public Road yesterday to remove their stalls by Monday or face the full force of the law. This is, as a result of the newly built Diamond market tarmac.
Jason Glen, who has had a stall on the Diamond Public Road for over a year stated, “With the new location reserved for vendors it will inconvenience our customers to come into the scheme. This will hurt our businesses and my only livelihood.”
The present tarmac that measures 4,600 square metres is located between the first and second bridges on the southern side of the Diamond scheme. Mr. Glen said that the tarmac is out of the way whereas Diamond Public Road was a flourishing spot for business. He feels as if the vendors have been neglected and thrown into a corner.
The Diamond Market Tarmac that is to be used by the vendors from Monday
The Diamond market tarmac was built at a cost of $24.5M. The contract for construction of the tarmac was signed on November 20, 2009. According to Mr. Glen, the Neighbourhood Democratic Council (NDC) has installed new regulations on the vendors, for example removing the stalls every day.
Mr. Glen further stated that there was no light for the vendors after dark; there was no security, and the only provisions they had was a lavatory.
According to vendors at the market, the newly built tarmac will not be an ideal location for their customers to buy their goods.
Many residents of the Diamond Scheme use the Tarmac for recreational purposes such as barbeques, sports events, after school fun for children, and simply as a substitute playground.
