Jumbo Jet stable is champion stable
By Samuel Whyte
Donut Prince of the Colin Elcock stable had everyone shouting its name as most Turfites were left in awe and some in bewilderment at the conclusion of the feature C class Event (being downgraded from A) of the Fifth Annual Guyana Cup horserace meet which was held on Sunday last at the Port Mourant Turf Club.
The racehorse created the upset of the year so far by defying all odds to race away with the coveted $2M winners’ money and the Guyana Cup trophy compliments of Beverage Giants Banks DIH Limited in its first placement since being imported into Guyana a few months ago.

Donut Prince, owned by Pat Elcock and ridden by overseas based Guyanese Jockey Michael Semple, was a rank outsider before the race, in fact the animal was a virtual unknown.
The horse classified D1 and carrying a weight of 111 pounds, initially from Jamaica was imported from Trinidad. According to Colin Elcock, since Defending champion horses Miss Republic could not compete due to injury and the Message not being in the best of form also due to recent injuries, he was determined to do almost everything legally possible to retain the crown. He had to secure a top notch animal as an adequate replacement. He also flew in top jockey, overseas based Guyanese Michael Semple from St Kitts to do his riding and top Trinidadian Trainer Randolph Williams to whip his animals into shape and he knew it would have worked.
The race however was a ding dong battle from start to finish with 14 animals entering the starting gates and was not without incidents.
The lead and the chasing pack changed hands constantly as the animals were going at a majestic pace for the 1800M distance.
The packed arena by that time was on the edges of their seats as no quarters were asked and none given. Marathon Man, which was always in the leading pack, was running like its name suggest in its quest for the big money into the homestretch, by then Donut Prince with the skillful Semple on the perch was well positioned and had started to make its move.
As the animals headed for home it was Semple that majestically slid his animal through on the inside and across the line for the big pay day. Marathon man, Zelik and Miss Orientate rounded out the money.
Captain Crook of The Jumbo Jet Stable with Yap Drepaul the jockey took the Co feature three year old West Indies bred event from Work Force, Swing Easy and Celebrating Love. The first prize was $1.5M and trophy and the distance was 1500M.

The $1M prize money and trophy up for grabs in the two year old West Indies bred 1000M race was won by Serenity of the Jumbo jet stable with Drepaul again in control. Flying in The Park, Happy Choice and Come Dance with me were the other that placed.
There was another win for the Jumbo jet stable in the E class 1500M event when Got to go with Drepaul again in the saddle took top honours from Ferry landing, Pinch D cash and Night Crescendo to run away with the $800,000 winners money and trophy.
The race of the day was the Three year old 1200M event for Guyana Bred Horses with Wicked Intention of the Persaud Stable ridden by Jamaican Kevin Blake and Super Cat of the Rommel Jagroop stable ridden by Semple for the top prize of $600,000 and trophy. The animals ran virtually together for the entire distance with Wicked Intention getting the nod in a Photo finish. The G class 1000M event for the $500,000 first prize and trophy was taken by Maya from Prado’s Gold, Megan’s Choice and Momzelle.
The winner of the Guyana Bred two year old 1000M race was Blessings from I Want Revenge and Baby Flyer for the $500,000 top prize and trophy.
The Gap did just that to take top honours in the H class 1200M event and the $400,000 winner’s money and the Innovation Construction trophy from Royal Champion, Prospectors Pride and Pixie Fire.
Infinity won the I1 1200M event with a first prize of $200,000 for the Digicel trophy and stakes from Mona Lisa, Princess Renuka and Savion.

Kevin took the ‘I’ and lower maiden event worth $150,000 over 1000M.
The champion Jockey was Yap Drepaul. The champion trainer was R. Ramroop, while Jumbo jet stable race away with the champion stable award compliments of Woodpecker Products and the organizers.
In all close to 100 horses took part and over $20M in cash and trophies were presented to the winners.
