The Guyana Defence Force (GDF) Inter-Unit Athletic Championships is evenly poised with the respective teams sharing the opening day honours yesterday at the Base Camp Ayanganna Ground.
Coast Guard, Orlando Glasgow sprung his way to the Men’s Long Jump title with 6.41m, which upset clear favourite, Defence Head Quarters’ (DHQ), Quincy Payne, who was second with 6.26m. Base Camp Ayanganna’s (BCA), Lester Fraser was third with 6.12m.
Rushell Coates soars through the air yesterday afternoon to win the Women’s Long Jump event at the GDF Inter-Unit Track and Field Championships.
Payne had the best jump heading into the final round with his 6.26m, but Glasgow, who is also a basketball player with Victory Valley Royals in Linden, roared to the best jump in his last attempt after Payne had fouled out in the deciding round.
The points from the men’s long jump competition were evenly distributed as was the situation in the female long jump competition. Rushell Coates leaped to victory in the women’s event with a mark of 4.51m handing Training Corps the win. Base Camp Stephenson’s, Shinella Adams was second with 4.19m and DHQ, Eura Spooner third in 3.78m.
In the other completed events yesterday, First Infantry Battalion, Tyshon Bentick won the Men’s 5000m with BCA, Jamaal Chisholm second and Coast Guard, Collis Parkinson third.
Shanica Hatton, representing DHQ, won the Women’s 3000m with BCA Denecka Lyle second and DHQ, Shibekie Benjamin third.
The GDF Inter-Unit Athletics Championships is held annually to select the GDF team for the Joint Services Track and Field Championships. (Edison Jefford)
