GCC top first round in John Fernandes Second Division Hockey

In a battle of the second division giants at Thirst Park on Saturday afternoon, GCC came away as the clear winners with a 4-0 victory over the Carib Allstars leaving them as pool leaders of the tournament’s first round with still one match to be played.
GCC seemed to have their hands full when the match began as the Allstars spread the field with some solid passing and good ball possession. The GCC speedy counterattack however finally began to make inroads as young goalmouth poacher Mortimer Stewart found the back of the net in the 13th minute with a quick shot to catch goalkeeper Ryan Whitehead by surprise.
The game, starved for another goal, would take until the 11th minute of the second half before GCC added to their tally through an accurate Erik Hing strike. Although the Allstars pressed the scoring circle with every intention to reduce the margin, these efforts were met by solid defence by Philip Xavier and Stuart Gonsalves for GCC.
Mortimer Stewart would add his second for the GCC in the 50th minute with a reverse shot and Shaka Gill secured the fourth and final goal of the match with a goalmouth scramble to give GCC the decisive 4-0 victory and the top position in the pool.
Earlier in the afternoon, the Hikers chalked up their second win of the competition with a narrow 1-0 victory over a fighting under-21 side. After 52 minutes of scoreless hockey, the Hikers finally would make a well deserved break through with a clinical finish by Andrew Stewart. The lone goal would be enough to secure a victory for the Hikers who now sit in 3rd place with 7 points following Allstars with 10 points and GCC with 12.
