Dear Editor,
I am a longtime fan of West Indies cricket. I am extremely dissatisfied at the way the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) has been managing West Indies cricket, in particular over the last few months.
I write to express my disgust, displeasure and disapproval at the incompetence and ineptitude of the WICB.
In particular, the way in which the Chris Gayle and Shivnarine Chanderpaul situations have been handled recently, leaves a lot to be desired.
That is also true for Ramnaresh Sarwan dating back to last year. In all of international sports, high level athletes are by definition, unique. As such it requires special skills to effectively communicate with them.
Clearly you have fallen woefully short of those. The leadership of the WICB may have change, but it is clear that the ability of the board to manage men with rare talents is limited.
Even more concerning is the recent selection policies, where it seems as if this is being used as leverage to have our cricketers “toe the line”. This is indicative of vindictiveness. It is poor management indeed to have “a guillotine hanging over the heads” of the people we ask to represent us and give all their energies to West Indies cricket. The abuse of the players who are the game must cease.
I am a paying fans of West Indies cricket at the turnstile and by purchasing sports packages/channels to see WI cricket. I expect the best players to be on the field, not the ones who merely obey your idiosyncratic rules.
Clearly, a reminder is appropriate at this juncture. The WICB is merely managing a product – not creating it. Without WI cricket – there is no need for a WICB. I am sure you too realise this. Douglas G. Carter
