Football fans could be in for a treat this evening when the first annual fund raising Camptown Football Classic kicks off with the first of three games from 18:00hrs.
Galis Crew head Gordon ‘Dice’ Vanrossum (right), sponsor Lloyd Lashley and local organizer Johnny ‘Overseas’ Barnwell pose with the trophies and some of the gear up for grabs in tonight’s Football classic at the Camptown ground.
Put together by former Campton youth player Gordon ‘Dice’ Vanrossum who now resides in New York under his promotion group ‘Galis Crew’ the competition is expected to climax with the feature game between the New York All-Star Celebrity and the Georgetown All Stars for the Galis Crew trophy.
Johnny ‘Overseas’ Barnwell who is coordinating the local organising of the competition, informed that a BV under-17 side will face-off with Camptown’s under-17s in this evening’s opening match before a past Camptown side attempt to roll back the years with a match-up against a present Camptown side before the feature game commences.
The Orlando Gilgeous trophy will be up for grabs in the under-17 match while the winner of the past and present Camptown game will collect the Leroy Prescott trophy.
Vanrossum said that Coach Prescott, whom he described as the ‘backbone’ of the Camptown club, called him to solicit assistance in the form of gear for the club which resulted in him deciding to organize a fund-raising tournament and to play it every year from this year.
The organisers disclosed that football boots are among gears to be donated to the Camptown youth players while Footballs will also be presented to the club.
Lloyd Lashley, another overseas based Guyanese who owns the Core Janitorial Supplies business in Guyana, is on board as the premier sponsor, while JHM Barber Shop is another sponsor and admission to the crowd is $600. (Sean Devers)
