Hikers ‘D’, GCC ‘C’, Old Fort, School of the Nations, GCC ‘B’ all win
Keen competition was once again witnessed as the curtains came down on the Western Union branded Hikers Junior Hockey Tournament which ended yesterday, at the National Gymnasium.
The respective category winners display their hardware following the presentation of prizes after the tournament.
In the final round of matches, Hikers won the Boys Under-16 category from GCC ‘A’ and GCC ‘B’ in that order, while GCC ‘B’ claimed the Girls segment ahead of Hikers and GCC ‘A’.
United Security & Associate Inc was the sponsor of this category.
In the Boys Under-21 category, Hikers ‘D’ won from their ‘B’ and ‘C’ counterparts, while GCC ‘C’ were victors over their ‘B’ and ‘A’ units in the Girls division. This category was sponsored by Woodpecker Products.
Meanwhile, in the James Service Centre sponsored under-13 Category which was played on Saturday, Old Fort won the title ahead of Marian Academy and GCC in that order.
Thirty four under-13 players from six teams tested their skills against each other in what was one of the more entertaining displays of young talent.
Although all the teams started tentatively it was not long before the Old Fort goal scoring machine warmed up and stamped their authority on the day’s proceedings. They ended the group stage with the maximum15 points from five matches, scoring 22 goals, while conceding just five.
They brushed aside Hikers ‘B’ 3-0 in the semi-final and then claimed the title 4-1 against opponents Marian Academy ‘A’ in the final.
GCC got the better of Hikers ‘B’ 4-1 to take third place-off, while Marian ‘B’ defeated Hikers ‘A’ in the 5th place play-off.
The Global Technology sponsored Schools tournament was a more evenly contested affair with seven teams from five schools battling against each other. It was newcomers School of the Nations who shocked their opponents by playing undefeated to take home the title.
Even more impressive was the fact that the team played without any substitutes and showed that a team with three girls and one boy could win against mostly male dominated teams.
They defeated an impressive North Ruimveldt Multilateral High in the final 2-0, after earlier losing to the same team 0-1 in the group stage.
Queen’s College surprised Marian Academy ‘A’ 3-1 for third place, mainly due to some inspirational goal scoring from Devon Scott, while St. Stanislaus College ‘A’ defeated St. Stanislaus College ‘B’ 3-1 in the fifth place play-off.
