– Region Nine trio to arrive today, team departs tomorrow
The stakeholder collaboration in aid of distance athlete, Doretta Wilson, is bearing fruit with the Ministry of Amerindian Affairs, National Sports Commission (NSC) and Athletic Association of Guyana (AAG) making it possible for the athlete to compete in Trinidad.
Kaieteur Sport understands that the Ministry of Amerindian Affairs assisted in the purchasing of Wilson’s ticket for the athlete to compete at the Central America and Caribbean (NACAC) Cross Country Championships that will be held over this weekend.
The Ministry came good on its interest on helping the athlete after this newspaper had published some of the difficulties of the promising distance runner in forwarding her career. They had sent to the region for biographical and other information regarding Wilson.
The AAG has already purchased tickets for the eight athletes that will be representing Guyana at the prestigious Cross Country race. This newspaper understands that the NSC had initiated some discussions on Wilson with the Ministry of Amerindian Affairs.
Just last week, the athletics association had found sponsorship to outfit the athlete with one of the most modern road running shoes. From these indications, it seems as though the efforts that were made to highlight the issues of the athlete are yielding due returns.
Wilson and the other members on the national team from Region Nine, Hezron Pedro and Sonja Abraham, who was appointed Chaperon from the Rupununi Athletics and Sports Academy, will be arriving in Georgetown sometime this afternoon to join the team.
Apart from these stakeholders, the newly formalised Hinterland Youth and Sports Development Association (HYSDA) has also played a major role in helping both Wilson and Pedro compete in their first international race when they secured travel permits for them.
The two athletes were without passports and had to get travel permits to be able to leave Guyana legally; this newspaper understands that the HYSDA was able to successfully secure documents for the athletes, who will be making their national debut in Trinidad.
Alika Morgan is the other female athlete of the eight-member team with no clear word on Oslyn Collins’ inclusion since the AAG revealed that they were mulling the Trinidad-based former national junior athlete’s inclusion. Collins became a candidate after the United States-based distance athlete, Euleen Josiah-Tanner became unavailable for national selection.
The six males selected include Pedro, Cleveland Forde, Cleveland Thomas, Nathanie Giddings, Dennis Horatio and Wilbert Mingo. The team is expected to depart Guyana tomorrow to run on Saturday before returning to Guyana on Sunday.
