The Guyana Amateur Boxing Association (GABA) continues its forward thrust with youth development in 2011 after commencing in that vein during last year.
GABA President Steve Ninvalle told Kaieteur Sport that their youth programme continues with an Under-15 competition on January 29.
Several similar events have been programmed during this year as the association aims to have a pool of talented fighters that will eventually make a good representation of Guyana in overseas engagements.
The U-15 programme will tie in with the visit of Trinidadian AIBA Referee Judge Fitzroy James Beckles, who will be here to run a four-day course to help in the upgrading of the officiating skills of the local pool of referees and judges. Beckles arrives here on January 26.
Ninvalle said, the event will also see the local referees and judges involved in practical sessions to enable their assessment.
As a consequence the U-15 tournament along with the GABA Friday night fight card set for this month end will be used by Mr. Beckles to gauge the level of the Guyanese officials and how they have adapted to the methods taught.
According to Ninvalle, Coach Sebert Blake has been tasked with running the U-15 programme. Blake has been successfully working with a number of junior boxers as well as seniors at the Forgotten Youth Foundation (FYF) Gym in Albouystown for several years now.
His tutelage has produced several outstanding young fighters, including the Allicock brothers. He also trains female champ Shondell Alfred.
