Minister of Culture Youth and Sport Dr. Frank Anthony in feature remarks at the presentation ceremony for the 21st Kashif & Shanghai football competition held on Friday evening at Sleepin International complimented all for their fine efforts in making the tournament a resounding success.
He praised the organisers for once again showing their ability of filling the Stadium to capacity which was achieved with local club sides stating that International cricket did not achieve such a feat whilst all the tickets were sold out; many patrons did not show up.
“This tournament has really grown and over the last couple of years and K&S through this tournament has set the bench mark in this country.”
Minister Antony emphasized that many people believe that big things cannot be achieved in Guyana but assures that we have persons with the talent and vision to make the impossible happen.
“We have people here with that sense that if we come together, if we work hard together and set ourselves these tasks as a country, nothing is impossible for us to achieve and that is what this organisation is reflecting here. That once we set our sights on any goal, that we can accomplish it and that is why it is so easy to work with them because every time they say they are going to do this, they are able to deliver.”
Sports in today’s world is big business Dr. Anthony reminded, citing that in Guyana we are doing a lot of amateur sports and we are now learning how to organise in a professional way and how exploit for monetary benefits.
This event he also said is teaching us how other sporting events can take place on a calendar basis and also make money, pointing out the many spin offs that are derived from mega events where thousands of persons benefits.
“What I would like to see is that we have more sports entrepreneurs that are able to take other sporting disciplines whether basketball, volleyball or other major disciplines and make them into events like this that can become real calendar events and everybody can be winners.”
The Government, Dr. Anthony said will be looking at building other facilities that will take care of the rise in sporting activities around the country.
“We are committed to ensuring that facilities are there that persons can use to enhance which ever sport they are inclined to which has a direct spinoff to healthier lifestyles which is important for the healthy growth of our nation.”
Dr. Anthony also reminded that K&S have been enjoying the support of the Government and President Bharrat Jagdeo ever since he was a Junior Minister of Finance.
“This relationship continues to be strong and we have seen that they have grown, they have delivered and they would continue we expect to deliver even more. So we are very proud of them and they can count on continued government support.”
Minister Anthony also commended K&S and +One Fashions for forging a partnership which will benefit the development of the game.
“I hope that with this partnership with +One that we’ll also encourage other companies to come into Guyana and invest in sports. Guyana is open for business, opened for sports business, let’s get more such companies come here. We also have our part to play and we have to deliver.”
GFF President Colin Klass complimented the sponsors for their continued commitment towards the staging of Guyana’s premier knock-out competition. He said that the GFF will continue to work with K&S to manage and maintain a high level tournament in keeping with the mandate of the International Body.
The GFF boss believes that the time has come for the construction of more Stadiums’ around the Guyana pointing out that the finals is fast out growing the Guyana National Stadium, Providence.
Klass however noted that discipline continues to be a concern to the GFF stating that discipline off the field has a direct impact to what happens on the field.
“All of our teams have failed because of indiscipline and inconsistency and I would like to see us paying keen attention to out discipline. Sometimes our administrators contribute to the indiscipline of our players and as President of GFF I can assure that a number of harsh measures would be put in place to address this issue both on and off the field.”
Klass welcomed +One Fashions to Guyana and informed the gather that they were here to stay.
“I want to let you know that the entry point to the Caribbean is Guyana which means that we expect and anticipate to benefit tremendously, the best and produce the best for our football.”
Troy Cadogan, Marketing Director of Ansa McAl Trading in his remarks thanked the K&S Organisation for affording his Company the opportunity of sponsoring the best run tournament in Guyana.
Cadogan noted that to have been staging such a competition for 21 consecutive years with over 100,000 persons attending the last spectacle amounts to phenomenal success pointing out that it has become a Guyanese institution which is celebrated by many here at home and abroad.
“We have watched players and teams grow in maturity and skill level and many can be proud of their accomplishments in this tournament. Not only the finalists but those teams who may not be quite there yet but are well on their way to achieving the pinnacle of football success in the not too distant future.”
Ansa McAl Cadogan reminded is committed to partnering with the K&S Organisation for many years to come.
GT&T’s Assistant PRO Oscar Clarke complimented the organisers for staging another successful tournament and that GT&T remains committed to the tournament.
“We will continue to embrace this tournament and trusts that it grows from strength to strength. We recognize that this tournament continues to be a major calendar event for Guyana and we hope that with every passing year it gets better.”
