Robbery accused Marrasha David, 30, of 20 A Rose Hall Town Corentyne was on Tuesday sentenced to a total of nine years in jail by Magistrate Tajenarine Ramroop at the Albion Magistrate’s court.
The man pleaded guilty to charges of robbery under arms; possession of arms without being the holder of a licence; and being in possession of ammunition without being the holder of a licence.
His wife, Gail Batson, 27, who was charged with two counts of possession of arms and possession of ammunition pleaded not guilty and was placed on $75,000 bail on each count.
She is being represented by Attorney at law Mursaline Bacchus.
Prosecutor Inspector Satrohan Dayaram said that on Friday December 17, Belvedere, Corentyne, while being in the company with another and armed with guns and wearing mask, robbed Khemwattie Harrinarine of three gold chains, one pair gold bangles, two gold rings and $130,000 in cash.
Dayaram added that the following day, at Rose Hall Town , Corentyne, Berbice, David had in his possession one .32 Colt semi automatic pistol and three live rounds of .32 ammunition.
The prosecutor also told the court that on December 17 around 18:50 hrs the accused and his accomplice Clinton Pestano, who is still on the run, robbed the defendant.
The police launched an investigation and discovered that the bandits had fled leaving two bicycles and some other items behind. The accused was arrested on the same day.
On the following day a search was conducted on David’s home residence and the gun and ammunition and a yellow mask were also found.
The defendant’s wife was also arrested and she admitted that the gun and ammunition belonged to her husband. She told investigators that she had taken the gun out of its hiding place and had thrown it out of the window.
David was sentenced to three years in jail on each charge.
