(Kaieteur News) – A Blairmont, West Bank Berbice man who allegedly broke into his sister-in-law’s home and raped her last Thursday night, was charged for the offense and granted $250,000 bail.
Lookesh Daljit, 38, of Lot 14 Blairmont, appeared at the Blairmont Magistrate’s Court before Magistrate Michelle Matthias, five days after committing the act on his brother’s wife.
It is alleged that on June 11, Daljit, also known as ‘Willy’, sexually penetrated the 26-year-old woman without her consent. He was not required to plea as the charge was read in his hearing. The prosecution stated that it was ready to go forward with the matter, as investigations are complete.
The accused, a cane harvester, was granted bail, with added conditions that he steer clear of the virtual complainant for at least 50ft. Failure to comply to those conditions will see a revocation of his bail, and him being detained for the duration of the case.
The matter will resume on June 29, 2026.
The victim, who is a part-time worker, lives alone with her daughter. On Friday, she told reporters that she was in bed on Thursday evening when a sound woke her. Upon investigating, she found nothing and went back to bed. Her daughter was asleep too.
Another sound, much like a footstep, would wake her up again, and she would then observe her husband’s brother, Daljit, standing in her home. The man immediately choked and threatened to kill her and her daughter should she attempt to alert anyone, she said.
He then reportedly told her that it was his birthday, and demanded to have sexual intercourse with her as his birthday present, which she stated she promptly objected to. This angered the perpetrator, who then snatched her by her hair and choked her with more violence.
She related that he placed her on the floor, took both their clothing off, and ordered her to perform oral sex on him. As she refused, he nevertheless pinned her down and forced himself inside her. The traumatised woman said she was fearful for her and her daughter’s lives, which caused her to abide by his instructions to remain quiet.
After completing his act, Daljit reportedly took a ‘Sting’ from her refrigerator and drank it, and before he left, he told her they must have another session. Also, she was threatened that if she disclosed the incident to anyone, he would kill her.
After he left, she reached out to neighbors who assisted her to the hospital for medical attention. A report was made to the Blairmont Police Station, and shortly after, her brother-in-law was apprehended.
Speaking to this publication, the woman said she is afraid of what could possibly happen to her, now that her assailant is out on bail.
