At least $792M for construction of New Amsterdam Market

(Kaieteur News) – The construction of a new market facility in New Amsterdam, Region Six is expected to cost approximately $792 million.

The project which is being executed through the Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development was opened at the National Procurement and Tender Administration Board (NPTAB) recently and has attracted some 42 contractors.

With no engineer’s estimate listed, the works will be done in four lots. Contractors interested in all four lots, have bid between $792 million and $1.4 billion for the project.

Kaieteur News understands that the project is part of the $18 billion approved in the national budget for markets across the country.

President Irfaan Ali had announced in August 2025, that the government would replace the decades-old New Amsterdam market with a new modern structure.

Minister of Local Government and Regional Development, Priya Manickchand had said recently, that markets remain critical economic hubs within communities, providing livelihoods for hundreds of families, while ensuring access to fresh produce and goods for residents. She said her ministry is working to improve the infrastructures, enhancing sanitation facilities, addressing drainage concerns, and creating a more organised and resilient space for vendors and customers alike.
