(Kaieteur News) – A 30-year-old secondary school teacher was killed on Tuesday morning, after the minibus she was travelling in, lost control while overtaking, toppled onto its side, and plunged partially into a roadside trench, leaving several other passengers, including students, injured.
The victim has been identified as Tineka Hicks of Great Diamond, East Bank Demerara (EBD), a teacher at Dolphin Secondary School.
The incident occurred at approximately 08:30h. along the Diamond New Interlink Road, EBD, under conditions made treacherous by heavy rainfall.
According to police, the minibus was travelling north along the western driving lane when the driver attempted to overtake another vehicle. He lost control of the bus on the wet surface, causing it to topple onto its right side, skid, and come to rest partially submerged in a trench on the western side of the road.
Hicks was found pinned inside the vehicle. Despite the emergency response, she could not be saved and was pronounced dead on the scene. Her body was subsequently taken to the Memorial Garden Funeral Home.
Six other occupants — three students and three adults — sustained injuries and were transported to the Diamond Regional Hospital for treatment. The driver of the minibus was taken into police custody, and investigations are ongoing.
News of Hicks’ death prompted an immediate and heartfelt outpouring of tributes on social media from colleagues, students, and members of the public who knew her.
Dolphin Secondary School, in a statement posted on Facebook, said it was “deeply saddened by this sudden loss.”
“Tineka was a valued member of our school family whose presence, dedication, and contributions will be greatly missed by students, staff, and all who had the privilege of knowing her,” the school said.
The loss adds to a troubling pattern of fatal road accidents on Guyana’s public roads, with wet conditions and reckless overtaking among the most persistent contributing factors.
