Hunting their 10th regional One-Day cricket title since Roy Fredericks led them to their first in 1980, Guyana, without a title at this level since 2005, begin their campaign in this year’s regional 50-over competition with a first round game against the Sagicor High Performance Centre (HPC) team at Kensington Park here from 09:00hrs today.
Although the selectors have chosen a young team after the poor showing in South Africa, the return of Shivnarine Chanderpaul should make a huge difference in the batting line-up which also includes Test players Skipper Ramnaresh Sarwan and Narsingh Deonarine.
Leon Johnson and Royston Crandon are the other players in the Guyana side with senior West Indies ODI experience and on a track which could make stroke play a problem due to the recent rain, Chanderpaul and Sarwan will need to play crucial roles with the bat.
In a zone with debutants HPC, the Leeward Islands and Barbados, the South Americans need just 2 wins to advance to the semi-finals and today should be an ideal opening match although they will not want to be complacent against their inexperienced opponents.
Guyanese pacer Brendon Bess is the only player with Test experience in the HPC side which also includes Guyanese Veerasammy Permaul and Rajendra Chandrika.
With Sewnarine Chattergoon and Travis Dowlin both left out, the inform Richard Ramdeen could make his senior 50-over debut at the top of the order and have the versatile Chris Barnwell as his opening partner.
Using Chanderpaul could also be an option but leaving the dependable left-hander to provide the glue to hold the middle order together batting at number 5 after Sarwan and Deonarine, could better serve Guyana’s interest.
Steven Jacobs looked confident in South Africa while Johnson seems to have regained his form and confidence after losing his place in the side after 3 ODIs for the West Indies in Canada two years ago.
Both are former West Indies under-19 Captains. Jacobs is 22 and Johnson 23 and both were a part of the long-term investment by the Guyana selectors. Twenty-five year old Assad Fudadin is also a talented young player who only this year was in the West Indies ‘A’ team.
However, if Guyana opts to use Royston Crandon at six and 20-year-old Jonathon Foo plays then Jacobs, who bowls useful off-spin, could be given the nod in the final eleven ahead of Johnson and Fudadin.
Anthony Bramble who turns 20 in December, Captained Guyana in the last regional under-19 tournament held in Jamaica last year and his debut today as Keeper gives Guyana’s batting more strength since he is an accomplished if not flamboyant batsman.
Leg-spinner Davendra Bishoo could be used as the wicket taker while baby of the team 18-year-old West Indies under-19 pacer Keon Joseph who is genuinely quick, could make his senior One-Day debut ahead of his more experienced fellow Berbician Esuan Crandon, who at 28, has lost some of his pace.
Joseph and Barnwell could share the new ball while Deonarine, Royston Crandon and Jacobs could be asked to provide spin support for Bishoo.
For the HPC the lively Bess could be partnered with the new ball by either Shannon Gabriel or Kevin McLean with spin support from left-armer Permaul and leg spinners Nkrumah Bonner, Keron Cottoy and Skipper Shamarh Brooks.
The HPC team could focus their attack on pace with the towering Jason Holder and left-arm pacer Delorn Johnson also in their squad to complement Bess who made his Test debut against South Africa in Barbados this year.
Chandrika is full a talent and along with pugnacious left-hander Kieran Powell will want to give the youngsters a positive start.
The absence of gifted Jamaican Andre Creary, who is recovering from surgery done last month, is a big blow for HPC but Kyle Corbin, Brooks, Holder, Devon Thomas and even the pint-size Keeper Shane Dowrich can all produce with the bat.
