David Dick blasted 5 fours and five sixes in an attacking 63-ball 77 while National under-19 Skipper Dexter Solomon smashed an unbeaten 37 from just 37 as GNIC whipped hosts DCC by 66 runs in yesterday’s final of the Georgetown Cricket Association (GAC) Haier Cup 40-over 2nd division cricket competition.
The belligerent Dick played as many shots as prizes given out to the competition’s outstanding performers after the game while Marvin Munroe (28), Quency Ovid-Richardson (28), Elton Baker (30) and Ronale Bourne (31) all chipped in as GNIC amassed 289-7 when their 40 overs expired.
Cohen Esmond started DCC’s reply with all guns blazing and played an array of audacious shots on the small ground in his 54-ball 65 which was decorated with 8 fours and a six but only Jaron Byron (36) and Denis Squires (21) of the other batsmen reached 20 as DCC fell for 223 off 35.2 overs.
Skipper Orlando Frazer (3-39), Jermaine Grovesnor (2-33) and Premchand Sookdeo (2-33) bowled well for GNIC who defeated Everest in their semifinal on Saturday.
DCC, who got past MSC in their semifinal, were pushed on the back foot from the inception as Munroe and Ovid-Richardson added 51 for the first wicket before Munroe was bowled by Skipper Lyndon Lyght.
Kevin George then had Baker caught and bowled at 101-2 before Ovid-Richardson ran past off-spinner Leroy Primo and was stumped at 113-3.
Shawn De Souza (15) fell to a controversial catch by Primo off Esmond although it appeared that the fielder was not in total control of his motions when the ball fell out of his grasp.
De Souza’s demise created the opportunity for Bourne, who faced 19 balls for his 31 with 2 fours and two sixes and the explosive Dick to launch a vicious attack on the hapless DCC bowlers on a track with some turn for the spinners.
When Bourne was bowled by Lyght at 214-5, Fraser departed off Squires at 240-6 and Dick hit Esmond to deep mid-wicket at 257-7 in the 38th over, the run rate was still high.

GNIC skipper Orlando Fraser collects the massive Haier Cup from Queensway Mohamed Qualander after their victory against DCC yesterday.
Solomon’s onslaught towards the end, pushed the total out of DCC’s reach as he dominated a 32-run unfinished 8th wicket partnership off just 13 balls with Grovesnor as Lyght finished with 2-36 from 5 overs and Esmond 2-48 from 4 overs.
A vocal crowd watched as Grovesnor removed Lawrence Smith (6) and Ron Ramnauth (8) before the free scoring Esmond and Byron consolidated the position with a 68-run partnership before Sookdeo got rid of both batsmen in the space of a run to leave the score on 123-4.
Squires and Denver Greaves (19) offered some fight but once Fraser picked up three quick wickets to reduce the home side to 190-9 it was all over although the last pair of Edward Burnette (19) and Primo (14*) put together 33 runs before Burnette was run out.
Dick received the Best batsman prize and the Man-of-the-Match award while Fraser copped the best bowler prise.
Over a million dollars worth of individual prizes of TV sets, DVD players and Microwave products were handed out to outstanding players and officials at the well organized presentation ceremony which climaxed a very successful competition for the GCA and the sponsors, Queensway. Kaieteur will give more details on the individual prizes presented in our next issue.
GCA President Roger Harper thanked the sponsors for their contribution to cricket in the city and congratulated the winners while GCA Vice-President Neil Barry and the two captains from yesterday’s match were among those who spoke at the presentation ceremony.
