Mike Parris to help train Commonwealth boxers

Michael Parris won Olympic Bronze in Moscow in 1980, some 30 years later his feat has not been matched by a Guyanese at the Olympics. Parris is known to be a hard worker, disciplined individual and was a classy boxer in the ring.
His experience has been sought out by the Guyana Amateur Boxing Association (GABA) to help prepare their three-man fight team attending the Commonwealth Games set for India. The boxers; Devon Boatswain, Clevon Rock and Dexter Jordan are currently encamped at the National Gymnasium and are being trained by Terrence Poole, National Coach Wincel Thomas, Sebert Blake and now Parris.
GABA President Steve Ninvalle told Kaieteur Sport, that Parris brings a wealth of experience and his unmatched achievement locally, will be a valuable experience to be shared with the young fighters. He highlighted Parris’ penchant for hard work and discipline and his knowledge of the sport as key attributes that will benefit the boxers.
Ninvalle will accompany the team as Manager, while Poole is the Coach. They leave for India on September 29 and arrive the next day, while the action is set for October 5-13 at the Talkatora Indoor Centre.
Guyana will hope to secure medals at these games and Parris’ input is anticipated to help stimulate the boxers to strive for greatness. Parris has always expressed a willingness to help young fighters in any way possible and the move by GABA is a welcomed one. It is hoped that Parris will feature on any team selected to train fighters for the next Olympics set for London, England in 2012.
