A shift in power in the Caribbean was the clear message as play came to a conclusion on the first day of action yesterday in the table tennis events at the Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Games in San German, Puerto Rico.
Guyana defeated Trinidad and Tobago by three matches to two to cause somewhat of an upset in the first stage of proceedings. The Guyanese also defeated Panama 3-1 to reach the quarterfinals, which was played last night, of the team competition.
Two wins from Dexter St. Louis, who plays most of his table tennis for CAM Bordeaux in the powerful French League, was not sufficient to stave off defeat for Trinidad and Tobago. He beat both Paul David and Idi Lewis.
St. Louis was the only victor for Trinidad and Tobago. Christopher Franklin was the hero of the hour for Guyana; he overcame both Khaleel Asgarli and Curtis Humphreys whilst Idi Lewis and Paul David combined to win the vital doubles.
