One of the biggest jokes in international relations since Thucydides wrote his famous book, “The Peloponnesian Wars,” 2000 years ago occurred in the United Nations a few decades ago. The UN Human Rights Commission consisted of countries where rights, justice and freedom were non-existent. It was an act of international madness. Dictatorships that murdered, jailed, and tortured their people sat on this valued section of the UN. On that body sat Cuba and Libya among others. President Ronald Reagan dedicated the last years of his presidency to dismantling this mockery.
In Guyana, the masquerade continues. The Government of Guyana has put its hypocrisy on display at the Umana Yana the past two days. A conference was called to discuss an idea Cheddi Jagan founded after he became President — the New Global Human Order. The outcome will be forwarded to the UN for implementation.
Of course the UN has no time for the nonsense that comes out of many small states that keep their people in bondage. One thought that the dictatorial kings of this land would have known that after the contempt that was shown to them at the climate summit in Copenhagen last December.
Here is one of the most lawless governments in the entire world that has been in power for 18 years during which time this territory has become a failed state exhorting the UN to pursue a new global order of international humanity. What about the breakdown of law and order here?
What about the nexus between criminals dealing in drug trafficking and powerfully placed politicians? What about the shameless discrimination against almost half of the population because of ethnicity? What about the desecration of the rule of law and the sad decline of the judicial structure?
What about the ruthless hijacking of state resources distributed by an incestuous ruling party to its clans? What about the need for the restoration of the order of decency in Government in this nation?
Here are the reasons for the cries for such an order. A citizen wins a very large judgement against the State. The government appeals. The higher Court met recently to hear the appeal.
The State lawyers want to see the judge’s book in which the written testimonies are contained. The court agrees. The book cannot be found and the hearing of the appeal now stands in jeopardy and the man may never collect his award.
What kind of lawlessness in this? Yet the people who preside over this chaos and nihilism are calling upon the UN to implement a new order of world affairs.
What about a new order for Guyana where the exercise of state power is so primitive that the world laughs at us? We are going back in time but we want the UN to supervise a new international arrangement for the purpose of a more just world.
Last week, a young man was sent to jail for the possession of a pipe that is used to smoke cocaine
To think that in 2010 this could happen makes a mockery of modern civilization in this country. The fools that we have for rulers and leaders in the post-colonial world, love to denounce the white man, the US and our former European masters. Yet neither in the US nor in the Europe would there be an automatic jail sentence for possession of a smoking utensil.
Maybe in this country we need a new order of commonsense for those who control the reins of power. Here is an example of instead of asking the UN for the readjustment of the international system, the little dictators should ask for help to acquire commonsense. GWI is a state entity.
It cuts roads to lay pipes. After the pipes are placed, the road is recovered with mud and huge craters developed afterwards. The rainy seasons come and the roads and streets become impassable and visitors to the country refer to us as a primitive land as the BBC sports correspondent did went he came here to cover World Cup Cricket in 2007.
People who cannot run a country where civilized values prevail are urging the UN to change the world. The best plea would be to ask the international community for helping in securing commonsense.
The ancient things that thrive in this county are embraced by our rulers who have absolutely no interests in changing Guyana for the better. Police torture victims and brutalize them. Our rulers call such horrendous abuse of the law as “roughing up.”
Yet these jokers for leaders that we have in this county want the world to implement a New Global Human Order.
