(Kaieteur News) – Dem boys seh marriage is a long, long road. It so long that sometimes you does forget where you start and where you supposed to end up. But lang ago de story did longer because when people get married, most times it was for life whether or not dem happy in the relationship. It used to be called commitment.
Now, two persons who were truly committed to each other were John and Mary. They married and reach forty years together. Forty! That is not simply anniversary, that is endurance test. To stay together for so long demands a celebration.
So, John decide he gon do something big. He say, “Mary, me darling, me sweet sugar cake, tell me what you want for we 40th anniversary.”
Mary watching him quiet, like she measuring how much foolishness he about to talk.
John start strong. “You want a nice diamond ring? Real stuff. Expensive and classy. It will be the envy of your friends. The biggest rock you can find this side of the equator.
Mary say, “Not really.”
John blink. He ain’t expect resistance so early.
He regroup. “Alright then, how about a brand-new Mercedes Benz sports car? Top down, breeze in yuh hair, people watching you pass and saying, ‘Look Mary living large!’”
Mary say, “No.”
Now John getting nervous. He sweating like he just run from Stabroek Market to Kitty.
He try again. “Okay, okay—last big one. What about a vacation home in de country? Nice and quiet, fresh air, no noise, just you and me and de birds dem.”
Mary say, “No thanks.”
Now John vex small. He say, “Woman, you turning down everything like you ain’t know this is anniversary! So tell me straight—what you want?”
Mary look at him calm-calm and say, “John… I want a divorce.”
Silence fall in de house like current gone.
John stand up, scratch he head, do some quick maths in he mind—forty years, ring, car, house…
Then he say, “Mary, I love you, you know… but divorce….. I wasn’t planning to spend that much money.”
Talk half. Leff half.
