(Kaieteur News) – Dem boys seh if yuh really want study modern science, forget lab—just go and stand up by Annandale Public Road any time o’ day. Peak hour, off-peak hour, midnight, broad daylight—traffic does behave like it get PhD in confusion right deh where the big four-lane highway suddenly remember it is actually merging into a two-lane public road by Buxton – one lane going east and de odder going west.
Now, dem boys seh the engineers musta been feeling romantic because nothing says “love” like forcing two strong lanes goinf east into one lil lane going in the same direction, and hoping everybody cooperate. But Guyanese drivers don’t cooperate, boss. We does negotiate… aggressively. One man easing in, next man refusing to give way, and the third man creating a brand-new lane that exist only in he imagination and half on the parapet.
But wait, it get better. Some bright sparks decide, “why sit in traffic when Annandale got side streets?” So they peel off north, disappear like Houdini, and then magically reappear through another side street by Buxton, squeezing back in like they was invited all along. Dem boys seh is like a traffic relay race. Pass the baton through the village and rejoin with fresh legs.
And the police? Oh, dem boys seh the police know. They know. But knowing and doing is two different sports. So every day, the same chokepoint does perform like a matinee show. No tickets required, just patience and a full tank of gas.
Dem boys seh the real question is just what will it take to fix this? A sign? A barrier? A traffic light that actually respected? Or maybe a machine imported duty-free?
Because if the authorities can’t sort out one stretch of road where everybody could literally see the problem from space, then perhaps it time to subcontract the job. Give it to the minibus drivers. They already creating systems on the fly. Or better yet, put one market vendor in charge; nobody does manage crowd and confusion better than somebody selling bora on a Saturday morning.
Until then, dem boys seh pack yuh snacks, cue up yuh favourite chutney, and prepare for the daily Annandale Olympics where everybody racing, but nobody reaching faster.
Talk half. Leff half.
