While there has been no official word from the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB), it is understood that the senior Women’s Inter-County cricket tournament scheduled to commence tomorrow has been postponed due to accommodation problems.
Demerara were scheduled to oppose Essequibo and Berbcie in their two matches tomorrow and Friday in the City before Berbice opposed Essequibo in the round-robin competition.
Each team will play two matches in the competition with the team with the most points being declared the champions. This competition is also used by the Guyana selectors to pick the national team for the Regional women’s tournament.
It is understood that the postponement was mainly due to the unavailability of the GCB Hostel and indoor practice facility at LBI on the East Coast of Demerara but when contacted Chairman of the GCB Competitions Committee Carl Moore declined to comment on the reason for the postponement except to say that he was disappointed that national competitions are not being played at a time when this country is experiencing drought conditions and adverse weather cannot be an issue.
The national under-15 team had to be encamped in Essequibo since the GCB Hostel, which they rented, was ‘given up’ in anticipation that the LBI venue would have been ready since last year.
GCB President Chetram Singh who is overseas due to illness, had told the media in May last year that the facility would have been completed by November last year and informed at that time that the estimated cost for the entire project was G$60 Million.
“We are using our share of the money from the last World Cup to complete the facility at LBI and we are putting in two full length 120 feet pitches in the indoor nets so that the fast bowlers can have a run-up. The indoor nets and lighting will be similar to the one in Trinidad at the National Cricket Centre in Cova but the bowlers’ run-up will be longer,” Singh had explained.
When completed, The LBI project, located about 15 minutes outside Georgetown, will include a Hostel to accommodate 32 people, a kitchenette, a caretaker quarters, a gym, an indoor practice area equipped two artificial pitches, lights and a bowling machine.
The Women’s Inter-County competition has now been re-set to start on April 11 after the GTM under-19 three-day competition which has been re-scheduled to commence on April 7.
It is understood that all of the three-day GTM matches will be played in Demerara while one of the One-Day matches has been fixed for Berbice.
The recently concluded Castrol under-15 Inter-County one-day competition was marred by the venue problems after the game involving champions Berbcie, set for the Enterprise ground on the East Coast of Demerara had to be called off due to the deplorable condition of the ground which was inspected and passed fit by the GCB before the match was fixed for that venue.
Informed sources claim that financial and administrative issues have surfaced at the LBI facility while no electricity or water has been connected to the building as yet.
“While the GCB executive agreed to extend the Kitchen which was too small, additional work began without being sanctioned by the executive body while an advance of $720,000 for beds was given to the contractor without getting quotations from some of the country’s leading furniture manufacturers,” the source claimed. It is also understood that the renovations to the Kitchen cost an additional G$10Miliion.
The GCB continue to fix matches at out of town venues like the Ann Regina ground where there are no internet or telephone facilities for the media although large sums were spent on constructing a media booth at that venue which still has no electricity.
The Demerara team has already been selected but not released and an official release from the GCB is expected soon on the Women’s Inter-County tournament.
