Guyana’s Amateur Basketball Federation (GABF) is preparing to receive the Washington DC Jammers after the Maryland-based basketball team openly expressed a willingness to compete in Guyana some time this summer.
Contacted via telephone yesterday, newly elected GABF President, David Patterson made it clear that he will be meeting with a local representative of the team today to discuss the various issues relating to their presence in Guyana.
“I am trying to meet with him (Michael Burnette) to discuss them coming. We want them back on our calendar since they have been a major part for years. The idea is get national basketball playing as much as possible,” Patterson said.
The DC Jammers’ Organisation had sent a congratulatory message to the new Executive of federation earlier this week expressing their willingness to compete in a tournament in honour of late GABF President, Godwin McPherson.
“We would like to explore the possibility with you of returning to Guyana this summer to play in a Memorial Tournament honouring Col. Godwin McPherson for his contributions to the sport at the national level…” the message had stated.
Patterson believes that such collaborative efforts with international stakeholders are steps in the right direction. He said that the federation wants to build similar relationships with the Haynes Foundation and the South Carolina All-Stars.
Asked if he had formally responded to the D.C Jammers message, the GABF head stated that he will have the federation’s secretary dispatched their acknowledgement. “We feel honoured and are deeply appreciative of this kind sentiment,” he said.
The return of the D.C Jammers this year will break a three-year hiatus. They are expected to compete against Guyana’s senior national team with Patterson informing that the idea is to give the local team as much exposure as possible.
