BIDDING TIME!!! Cleveland Forde (third) assesses the situation and awaits the right time to attack as Wilbert Mingo leads and Cleveland Thomas follow respectively after the first turn in the AAG Cross Country yesterday.

Cleveland Forde solidified his candidacy for the National Sports Commission ‘Sportsman of the Year’ Award when he cruised to a comfortable and well crafted win in the Athletic Association of Guyana (AAG) Cross Country race.
Forde opened his 2010 Season with a sublime victory at the National Park field yesterday in 21:20.9 seconds making full use of his international experience and exposure before an enthused crowd that had built up for the event.
The national distance athlete left Guyana Defence Force’s Wilbert Mingo second and the Running Braves’ Cleveland Thomas third with times of 22:15.9 and 22:48.9 respectively after setting himself apart with less than a lap left.
Arguably the Caribbean’s most dominant distance athlete last year had ensured that those responsible for the National Sport Award had his name high on the list with performances that spoke for themselves in any section of the region.
Forde brought his form from winning the first two stages of the IAAF South American 10 km race, the CARICOM 10k and Antigua’s PM 10k in 2009 into this year with his win in the 8km Cross Country distance race yesterday.
He had a well-executed race after Mingo had set the early pace on the bumpy outfield of the National Park. Thomas followed the Defence Force athlete and Forde seemed relaxed in third after the first half of the gruelling terrain. A group of juniors that included Jonathan Fagundes and Chavez Sital made up the second pack approximately 100m behind. The slightly overcastted weather condition provided an ideal and favourable atmosphere for the athletes.
In his race calculations, Forde knew exactly when to make his move. He did so at the first turn into the last lap holding a 10 metres lead over Mingo. It was the last time Mingo saw Forde so closely in the race as Thomas also lagged.
The ‘Little Kenyan’ as Forde is also called, used his outstanding bottom speed to cruise to lopsided victory that did not look inevitable from the start of the race. He begged for rival Mingo to step up, but the soldier just could not hold.
