Cycling season pedals off tomorrow at National Park
17th Ricks & Sari Agro Industries Ltd. 11 race event to set the pace
Cyclists are in for another exciting and busy year according to National Coach Hassan Mohamed who has been the live wire for the sport for many years.
Mohamed’s programme at the National Park on the Road has continuously given hope and exposure to our riders.
The 2010 season will pedal off tomorrow at the inner circuit of the National Park with the 17th edition of the Ricks & Sari Argo Industries Limited sponsored 11 race meet from 09:300hrs.
Riders
Riders, young and old have looked forward to these programmes for many years and Mohamed has continued to deliver.
From the young brigade the likes of Raymond Perez Jr. will aim to maintain his unbeatable ways in the BMX 6-9 and 9-12 categories. Dineshwar ‘Chucky’ Ragubeer who has consistently been the number two to Perez will hope to turn the tables in 2010.
Among the young females, Crystal Blackman and Ashley Anthony have been doing their thing but are calling for more females to come out and join the sport.
Senior females Naiomi Singh and Marica Dick of Berbice are also calling for more competition.
The senior stars will be out to get back into competition mode with a number of local and Regional meets in the pipe line.
The likes of five-stage winner Geron Williams, Alonzo Greaves, Lear Nunes, Warren ‘Forty’ Mc Kay, Junior Niles, Robin Persaud, Tony Simon, Ian ‘Dumb Boy’ Jackson, Darren Allen, Daniel Ramchurejee, Enzo Matthews, Chris Persaud and Christopher Holder will all be aiming to establish early dominance among their rivals.
Differently able rider Walter Grant-Stuart is expected to be his usual competitive self in 2010.
The veterans and upright competitors will also be seeking to start off on a winning note. Niles had won the veterans Under-50 race with Lloyd Williams toping the field among the Over-50’s. Monty Parris, Shameer Baksh, Raymond Newton, Kennard Lovell, Aubrey Greavesande and Esau Oselmo are other veterans that will be out to hold their own.
Alonzo Greaves won last year’s event feature school boys and novices 35 lap contest in 1 hour 25 minutes 24 seconds ahead of Geron Williams, Warren Mc Kay, Junior Niles, Robin Persaud and Enzo Matthews in that order. The juvenile 10 lap race was taken by Linden’s Michael Nelson ahead of the city’s Tariq Baksh.
Meanwhile, representatives from sponsor Ricks & Sari and the Rodrigues Family will be on hand to assist with the distribution of prizes to the top performers.
The Late Regan Rodrigues, a former President of the Guyana Cycling Federation and Motor Racer started this event 17 years ago as his way of encouraging and giving back to the sport.
The Rodrigues Family has continued the tradition even after his passing.
