Panthers Basketball Club landed a major sponsorship deal with Colours Boutique where a quantity of uniforms and other gear was handed over to them yesterday at the Robb Street outlet of the store ahead of their engagement tonight.
Formerly known as Demerara Panthers, the Georgetown Amateur Basketball Association (GABA)-affiliated First and Third Division Club will have a new name and a new look in their season-opening game at the Sports Hall tonight.
The club will now be known as Colours Panthers following their receipt of different pairs of uniforms for both their teams. Renowned local designer, Michael Layne produced their impressive uniforms that were presented yesterday.
Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Colours, Milton Brandford told Kaieteur Sport that the club is perceived to be a disciplined franchise, and as a result he did not hesitate when the Head Coach, Deryck Alphonso approached the company.
“I know the coach of the team to be a disciplined person. Because of their discipline I am very happy to sponsor the team. I need just discipline and performance,” Brandford stated following the presentation of the basketball items.
The Executive Officer of the Boutique indicated that his willingness to support basketball as opposed to football has to do with the high maintenance of discipline in basketball that cannot be seen currently at local football matches.
“I would always emphasise in sport generally and especially in football that if those local administrators don’t have discipline then they cannot get my support. You can have talent but if you don’t have discipline, then what?” he asked.
Brandford said that the club may not be as highly ranked as some others, but discipline is likely to get them to the top in time to come. “We have to take chances. I know they will take some time and develop properly,” he indicated.
Colours Boutique will also facilitate the club in a proposal to Converse in a bid to procure international branding for them. Brandford said that Colours is an agent for Converse and it is important that he represent the club at that level.
Alphonso indicated that he was very happy about the deal and would be eager to augment the arrangement with an impressive trophy case. He said that opportunity comes as early as tonight when their Division III team play Nets.
The two teams will battle in the first game of a double-header to officially open GABA’s 2009/10 Season. The following game will see Courts Pacesetters take on new addition to Georgetown, East/West Fire in a Division I showdown.
