Merely seven months subsequent to his re-election to the Presidential seat of the Guyana Amateur Boxing Association (GABA), Afeeze Khan, faces impeachment following accusations of racial impropriety leveled at him by several boxers and coaches affiliated to the GABA.
Former Guyana Defence Force (GDF) heavyweight boxer now a qualified coach, Terrence Poole, then suggested that Khan do the honourable thing and tender his resignation.
Khan has since resigned.
The embattled president had however convened a meeting with the other GABA executives to discuss the issue. Subsequently, he requested two days to contemplate on the request.
Mr. K.A. Juman Yassin then reconvened the meeting yesterday afternoon.
Poole, yesterday afternoon, said that he was happy with the way the meeting went. He said that President of the GOA, Mr. Juman Yassin allowed everyone present to express his or her concerns. It was during this time that sordid tales of racial impropriety cropped up.
Coach of the Forgotten Youth Foundation, Sebert Blake, also recited horrible experiences and accused Khan of verbally abusing him using racial innuendoes. He said that he had supported Steve Ninvalle in the last Annual General Meeting (AGM) and this had infuriated Khan.
Blake added that he felt incapable of working with Khan since he (Khan) has demonstrated intolerance for anyone nurturing opinions and views that contradicted his position.
He also said that Khan’s unilateral and unconstitutional approaches to boxing matters made it impossible for him (Blake) to support his reinstatement. He was in full support of Khan’s removal.
Former national coach, Carl Franklyn, also cited instances when Khan had blurted racial remarks at him. He also asked Khan to step down.
Neil Kumar at his office yesterday morning, said that he was ignorant of the meeting at Olympic House but confirmed that he was in receipt of several complaints accusing Khan of racism.
Kumar said that this turn of events was bothering. Kumar further suggested an investigation into the allegations.
