It is with profound sadness the sporting fraternity learnt of the sudden passing of a great son of the soil Schubert Cappel, although the once part-time journalist was more popular on the basketball courts.
The sport that first gave him national attention was cricket. Schubert was an integral part of the Mark Harper led National Under-19 Team that participated at the 1977 Regional Under-19 Championship in St Kitts.
At Basketball he made his international debut against Suriname at the then National Sports Hall in a Goodwill Series in December of 1980, and when Guyana hosted the first Caricom Championship in August of 1981. He and Mark Agard were the rookies selected in the Hewley Harry led National Team that placed a respectable third.
Schubert played his second Caricom Championship in December of 1982 again under the stewardship of Harry in Jamaica. He was also selected in the 1983 Caricom Team but the Championship was cancelled.
His biggest moment came when he proudly represented Guyana at the World Military Games in Suriname in October of 1984.
He gave a good account of himself against opponents from Germany, China, Saudi Arabia, USA and Italy. Schubert played his last Caricom Championship under the captaincy of centre Eon ‘Watusi’ Andrews in 1985 in Barbados, and after that Championship he wrote a professional analysis of Guyana performances, check the Guyana Chronicle (Quarter) October to December 1985.
