Bill Express, an arm of the internationally renowned Western Union, has thrown its weight behind the organisers of a cycling Fiesta set for August 9, 2009 on Main Street, Amelia’s Ward.
Yesterday at their Main Street offices, Marketing Manager Natheeah King handed over a cheque for an undisclosed amount to Brian Allen, President of Roraima Bikers Club (RBC), organisers.
Securing the sponsorship for the event was Director of the Kashif and Shanghai Organisation, Aubrey ‘Shanghai’ Major who mentioned that his organisation was approached by the RBC to assist in securing funds to make the event a reality and they had no hesitation in obliging.
Initially, the event should have incorporated athletics and was slated for the Mackenzie Sports Club ground, but due to the inclement weather they were forced to revert to the Amelia’s Ward outdoor circuit.
“Western Union’s Bill Express was upfront with us when they were approached and this is the second time they are on board since we also ran off an event of this nature two years ago. We are grateful to Bill express for their contribution towards this event.”
Major assured that this will be one of the ‘biggest’ events of this nature in Linden with very attractive cash prizes up for grabs.
Allen in brief remarks, noted that the Amelia’s Ward circuit is not a new venue to the sport in Linden and it is noted for attracting large crowds, but this time around he is expecting the largest crowd ever.
“With this kind of support from Bill Express we expect even more participation from the cyclists.”
Plans are still in train Allen said for the Track Meet and they have set a tentative date of September 13, weather permitting. The Guyana Cycling Federation will be notified accordingly he said, while the green light for August 9 has already been given by the governing body for the sport. Nine events will be run off on the day, with another special event for Linden riders only. He too expressed gratitude to the sponsor for their assistance.
Ms. King expressed confidence in the K&S and RBC for bringing off an event of outstanding proportions, while highlighting the organising proficiency of K&S. “Bill express is pleased to be associated with them and like Western Union, our pledge is to support youth in sports and yet again we have taken this initiative to assist the organisers of this event. We have given them a sum to assist them with their expenses. In addition we are also going to donate the trophies for the 1st and 2nd place finishers.”
Ms. King also mentioned that Linden is some distance away from the capital city and most times their support is Georgetown based or close, but now they will be travelling to Linden.
“We want to let the people of Linden know that we care and we are here to render whatever assistance they may need. So come August 9, Bill express will be giving back to the Linden Community. We know for a fact that Linden is in need and we will always stand by their side.”
The sponsor also made a commitment to donate a quantity of water bottles to the cyclists who will be participating in the event.
