President of the Alpha United Football Club (AUFC), Odinga Lumumba is calling on the executives of the Guyana Football Federation to address several inconsistencies that he feels is threatening the efficient functioning of local football.
Barring such intervention, Lumumba is contemplating redress from the world governing football body, FIFA.
Lumumba vented his feelings at a press conference convened at the Water Chris Hotel, Waterloo Street Georgetown yesterday morning. It appears as though Anthony ‘Awo’ Abrams, a former member of the AUFC had traveled to neighbouring Suriname and joined forces with Leo Victor, a professional football club in that country.
Lumumba said that Abrams’ act contravened the law and warrants sanction. He further said that Abrams had furnished a letter to the Suriname authorities, purportedly from the local football authorities, requesting his (Abrams) release for a Georgetown fixture. According to Lumumba, Klass has denied any knowledge of the document. “The act, therefore, constitutes fraud and should be dealt with in no uncertain manner,” Lumumba said.
To compound matters Abrams had represented Leo Victor when that team played against ‘The Hammers’ in the just concluded Inter Guiana’s Club Championships and had stitched in three goals. Furthermore, Lumumba is contending that Abrams’ action had forced him to employ the services of Grenadian Kithson Bain to perform striker duties when in fact he (Abrams) should have been the player to occupy that slot.
“I have lost a lot of money because of Abrams’ indiscretions,” Lumumba fumed. He said that Abrams should be strongly sanctioned for his insensitive acts. “I believe that he should be fined and possibly suspended,” said Lumumba.
Quizzed on the possibility of dialogue between the Suriname authorities and their Guyanese counterparts to resolve the matter Lumumba replied, “The matter has engaged the attention of Colin (Klass) but he has so far been unable to resolve the issue so it seems obvious that we would have to seek arbitration,” Lumumba said.
Meanwhile, Kaieteur Sport sought a comment from General Secretary of the GFF, Noel Adonis. He confirmed that his organization is aware of the issue. He also assured that the officials of the GFF are communicating with officials of the Suriname Federation to bring closure to the issue. (Michael Benjamin)
