Guyana’s Judo team returned home with one gold, two silver and two bronze medals, after taking part in the Roraima Cup International Judo Tournament held in Boa Vista, Brazil on May 09.
The Team led by President of the Guyana Judo Association, Mr. Geoffrey Sankies and Coach – Sensei Charles Ambrose, included seven Judokas who traveled overland to Boa Vista.
The only female on the team, 13-year-old Athena Gaskin won Gold in the under 48 kg category by defeating her opponent Bruna Barudao in two of their three fights.
Eleven-year-old Hannibal Gaskin fighting in the under 38 kg lost his first fight to gold medallist Yago Luiz but came back to defeat Brandon Fontes to win a Silver medal.
Raoul Archer won three of his four fights in the under 83 kg category to gain a silver medal, while his teammate Verrol Williams, fighting in the same weight category, won the Bronze medal.
Overseas-based Guyanese Edward De Lima won a bronze medal fighting in the under 100 kg weight category.
In the under 73 kg category which was fought on a knock-out basis, Guyana was represented by Vernon Williams and Charles Ambrose who, despite impressive performances, failed to make it to the medal podium.
Guyana’s Judo team brought home the third place trophy, with the Teams from Roraima and Amazonas in first and second places respectively.
