TOO MUCH TO HOLD!!! Trenace Lowe (left) and Nigel Bryan tries assiduously to hold all the awards they collected yesterday.
The collaborative effort to have sport in schools was again underscored yesterday at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall when the National Sports Commission (NSC) awarded outstanding Mashramani Table Tennis players.
Minister within the Ministry of Education, Desrey Fox said that it is critical to have sport as part of the schools curriculum since there are physical education projects that can help develop children in other important areas.
She said that her ministry is working closely with the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport to have sport actively return to the schools’ curriculum and have more school children participate in sport nationally.
The two ministries had worked together before on hosting a basketball competition for secondary schools at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall recently.
Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport, Dr Frank Anthony supported Fox’s claim that the two ministries are working to have sport return to the schools when he said that it augurs well for the development of sport in Guyana.
“We are very pleased to facilitate this Mashramani Table Tennis Programme. I think this programme will help the development of sport in the country along with the collaborative effort of the ministries,” Anthony said.
He told the gathering that their desire, apart from competition, is to have healthy young people since research has shown that obesity is slowly creeping up on Guyana’s youth, who urgently need physical training.
“We need a balance between school work and the opportunity to play.
The lessons learnt from sport can take you through life so we have a concentrated focus of promoting sports in the schools,” the Minister informed.
Anthony encouraged parents to seek the help of the ministry if they are having problems with facilitating their children with sport and school.
He said that a Resource Centre will soon be made available to them.
Parliamentary Secretary Steve Ninvalle, Director of Sport, Neil Kumar and Guyana Table Tennis Association General Secretary, Godfrey Munroe was also present at the ceremony along with Pastor Kwame Gilbert yesterday. (Edison Jefford)
