Dear Editor,
I was flabbergasted when I read the story of Lucille Oudkerk, 64, of Wismar, Linden.
The stoning of her house; the deliberate destruction of her garden; the beating of her granddaughter; when will this obstruction stop?
As a Guyanese citizen, we each have the right to choose which political party we want to support.
Victimization and violence should not be practised against each other just because you may disagree with another person because he/she is supporting another political party.
Guyanese need to learn to live in coexistence, instead of living in segregation and hate.
Guyana is a multi-ethnic developing country which has been plagued by racial upheavals coupled to the politics of this country. History tells us that there have always been conflicts between the two major political parties.
If people should continue along these lines, then these virulent activities will consume Guyana’s economy, hamper its development and produce nothing more than waste.
The destruction starts by stoning houses, and cutting and burning gardens; soon after, there would be the burning of buildings, roads, and other infrastructure, murders, kidnappings, etc.
The outcome of such acts often results in the mass destruction of the economy. Can you imagine the thought of destroying development that would have taken years to achieve?
People will be discouraged to rebuild or invest in Guyana, because of its political instability. International organisations will be reluctant to invest in Guyana, which means that new technologies will not enter the country, and there would be a standstill of the expansion of industrialisation and investments.
If Guyanese do not refrain from destructive behaviours soon, we will all suffer because of our own actions; prices will go up, corruption will increase, the population will decrease, and development will experience retardation.
It is time for us to build a nation that is molded on the obligation from the standpoint of all citizens or groups in society ensuring the general well-being of everyone, regardless of whom they support, whether it is the AFC, PPP/C, PNCR, WPA, etc.
The Guyana of tomorrow starts with us. We are the ones that need to make the right decisions in the best interests of ourselves.
Let us bring to an end these virulent behaviours, and work together as Guyanese to move our country forward.
We need to remind ourselves of our motto: One People, One Nation, One Destiny.
