Bonus points was introduced for this competition and according to GCA President Bishwa Panday, it allowed healthy competition among the teams.
Panday expressed his Association’s appreciation to DDL for sponsoring the competition. “DDL as you all know has been one of the most outstanding corporate supporters of cricket in this country and the Guyana Cricket Board has long been a beneficiary of their investment.
The GCA was also a beneficiary last year and I wish to thank the Marketing Director, Ms. Sharda Chand and all the others at DDL for coming on board with the GCA in this competition.”
Panday recalled that teams were involved in a number of exciting matches but in the end DCC emerged victorious.
While acknowledging that the GCA had a very hectic year, Panday said his Association takes a very professional view when it comes to the management of the game.
“That is why between June 2007 and today we have had as many as eight structured round-robin competitions for Georgetown clubs.
This is no mean order and it attests to the work of my executive and in particular our Marketing and Administrative departments and the Competitions Committee.”
Panday believes that the success reaped in the city can be replicated throughout the country if the vision is there and persons are prepared to work hard.
DDL’s Marketing Assistant Alana Johnson in her remarks stated that DDL and Pepsi were quite pleased to be associated with the GCA for the Pepsi Cup tournament.
“We were quite happy with the outcome of the competition in that it was played in a manner that we at Pepsi could be proud, I was following it quite closely and the games were quire exciting and as you know, Pepsi is all about fun and excitement.”
Johnson said she is of the belief that the players read about that and followed it from the first until the last game and Pepsi were quite happy to be associated with a tournament that truly lived the Pepsi spirit.
Pepsi, also an international brand has had a long and outstanding association with cricket at the local level and also on the world wide scene, Johnson reminded.
“So coming on board with the GCA for this tournament was nothing strange because we have enjoyed supporting cricket and especially the youngsters. I also note that a lot of young people were involved in this competition so it was quite a good opportunity for us to engage our target group with a competition that kept them active.”
The young Marketing Assistant posited that competitions and tournaments are vital for the honing and development of skills and DDL will continue to support this vision in the sporting arena, generally.
The Pepsi Cup Champions DCC enjoyed a productive 2008, also taking the top spot in the Beharry Cup second-division competition, were runner-up to Young Warriors of Berbice in the Nationwide Neal & Massey 40-overs first-division competition and are well placed in the Gafoor’s Cup twenty20 tournament and have also been in the semi-final of the second division twenty20 tournament.
