The tournament dubbed the Caribbean’s World Cup has now officially ended with Jamaica coming out as the Champions.
Digicel has reported that the 2008 Digicel Caribbean Championships was the best by far and also garnered interest from all around the globe.
Digicel’s Head of Group Sponsorship, Kieran Foley, summarized the success of the tournament: “The Digicel Caribbean Championships ended on Sunday night with a BANG. A brilliant end game and spectacular prize giving ceremony summed up the passion and life that Digicel has set out to bring to football in the region.
This was especially fitting as the DCC Finals were broadcast LIVE in the USA, Asia, Caribbean and Central America. The DCC highlights shows are currently being broadcast in all of these regions and additionally in Europe.”
The DCC Highlights series which will be seen by over 200 Million football fans across the globe is produced by Digicel and Century TV and will end in February 2009 with the four final episodes featuring exclusive behind the scenes of the 4 Semi-Finalists: Cuba, Guadeloupe, Grenada and Jamaica. .
The 2008 Digicel Caribbean Championships also attracted scouts from Major League Soccer (MLS) in the USA and Colchester United FC in the UK.
Foley expounded: “The DCC was a great showcase of the talent we have in the Caribbean. In our efforts to develop football in the region, we are extremely happy that the tournament attracted scouts from the USA and the UK. We are also pleased that the performances of the teams have assisted them to move up in the FIFA rankings.”
Since the tournament, Jamaica and Cuba are among the 3 best movers of the FIFA / Coca-Cola World ranking, Jamaica moving up 33 positions and Cuba moving up 25 positions while Grenada moved up 2 positions.
Happy with the results of this year’s tournament, Digicel is committed to making the 2010 Digicel Caribbean Championships Bigger and Better.
