Cardinals XI’s beat Newton All Star by seven runs Sunday to win a trophy and $50,000 as the curtains came down on the Clyde Hoyte organized 20/20 Tapeball Tournament at the National Park Tarmac.
Jason Andrews
Sunday’s final was witnessed by a handful of spectators in glorious sunshine and Cardinals were off to a bad start when talented left hander V. Merhai was caught behind off the first ball of the game from B. Bacchus (1-24).
Skipper Jason Andrews (37 – 3 sixes 1 four) and Marcus Watkins (22) put on a partnership of 33 off six overs to revive the position before Watkins was dismissed.
Brian Sukhai batted sensibly with Andrews before Sukhai (16 – 1 six and 1 four) became the first of two victims for D. Denny (2-19) in the 12th over.
As Cardinals tried to ‘up the tempo’ in the latter stages, Newton All Star bowlers stuck to their task and picked up vital wickets at regular intervals with M. Marques (2-26), D. Horace (2-33) and S. Halim (2-21) doing the bulk of the damage as Cardinals were restricted to 124- 9 when their overs expired with extras contributing 20 runs.
With a run rate of 6.25 to win the game, Cardinals were not going out without a fight and their bowlers strangled the Newton openers, C. Hollingsworth (15 – 1 four & 1 six) and Kevin Joe (14) with excellent fielding and tight bowling from Rawle Munroe (0-13) and Sukhai (1-13). After 5 overs only 13 runs were scored as the openers struggled to get the ball away.

The introduction Karranchand Indarjit (2-21) broke the partnership when he struck with his second ball to end a 53 run opening stand. Good bowling performances also came from Seon Sertima (1-26) and Kerwayne Jackson (1-32). Y. Sooklall and Marques each contributed 19 runs for Newton All Star who could only muster 117 runs in a losing effort.
